Honoring Our Veterans – Nicolas Marr | Reliant Funding

Nov 19, 2018

Veteran’s Day is the one day set aside to honor those who have served and continue to serve our nation. It’s also an excellent opportunity to teach civilians about the sacrifice service members have made and also to acknowledge them in the workplace. To show our appreciation, all month long we will be featuring employees who have served our country before joining the Reliant Funding family.

Nick Marr (Director of Wholesale)

Branch: U.S. Army
Years active: 2004 – 2008
Rate: 21D – Diver
Rank: E5 or Sergeant

What does being a veteran mean to you?

In my opinion being a veteran represents the concept of the greater good. It was my way of validating my existence as a human in that I believe we all owe the planet and humanity more than we take during our stay.

What inspired you to join the military?

I was inspired to join the military based on my desire to seek adventure and experience that is functionally not for sale. The richest man in the world will never know what it feels like to jump out of an airplane or dive in the pitch black of night with a group that’s membership is not for sale. The only way to have these experiences and make this impact on the American way of life is commit every bit of your being to this pursuit for at least 4 years and overcome extremely high odds of failure.

What experiences impacted you the most when you served?

The people! Elite military units are the highest concentration of humans with the ability to plan, execute, and endure the most complicated and dangerous tasks on the planet with zero regard for their own agenda. If you think you are smart or cool go hang out with a spec ops team, so you can figure out how far from perfection you are with veracity.

In looking back on your time in service what are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the recovery of Lance Corporal Stephen F. Johnson remains. His mother found my team and explained how much it meant to bury her son after being made aware of what my team did to recover his remains.

Does your time in the military continue to influence your life today? Do you apply anything from that time to your day-to-day life now?

100% YES!! I hold myself accountable to the exact same set of standards and ideology that was impressed upon me in the military. I do not subscribe to the civilian “I tried my best” bull.

What advice do you have for veterans who were recently discharged or who are on the verge of a discharge?

In 2018 we’ve taken huge steps as a country to make sure veteran have great benefits. Take the time to research everything available to you and how best it will benefit your future. Don’t suffer in silence be it with your checkbook or your emotions. There are resources everywhere.
