Honoring Our Veterans – Dennis Burke | Reliant Funding

Nov 1, 2018

Veteran’s Day is the one day set aside to honor those who have served and continue to serve our nation. It’s also an excellent opportunity to teach civilians about the sacrifice service members have made and acknowledge them in the workplace. To show our appreciation in addition to our 2018 Veterans Day offer, all month long we will be featuring employees who have served our country before joining the Reliant Funding family.

Dennis Burke

Branch: United States Navy
Years active: 2009-2014
Rate: Aviation Maintenance Administration (AZ3)
Rank: Petty Officer Third Class (E-4)

Where and when did you serve

Travis Airforce base from 2009-2011 2011-2014 North Island Coronado

What does being a veteran mean to you?

“It means being a part of a long lineage of brave and selfless individuals who sacrificed their freedom to preserve the freedom of everyone else that calls this country home.”

What inspired you to join the military?

“I wanted to get out of the town that I called home for twenty years and see the world. I wanted to be part of something larger than myself, and I felt unsatisfied in the traditional college route. After my sophomore year, I started looking into options, and the Navy was a clear choice. My grandfather served in World War II. My great Uncle served in Vietnam and took me to Washington DC as a kid on Memorial Day to honor his fallen friends. My other Uncle also served Navy during the Gulf War. I was Navy all the way.”

What experiences impacted you the most when you served?

“The thing that resonated most with me was the comradery and sense of team. No man left behind. I met lifelong friends while active duty and we accomplished a lot of tall orders that appeared to be impossible from the outside. We got it done together.”

In looking back on your time in service what are you most proud of?

“Being part of that long lineage of selfless individuals who sacrificed their safety and freedom so that others could enjoy them.”

Does your time in the military continue to influence your life today? Do you apply anything from that time to your day-to-day life now?

“The military instilled and drilled a sense of pride in me. It has shaped my routines and how I carry myself. Integrity if you will.”

What advice do you have for veterans who were recently discharged or who are on the verge of a discharge?

“Utilize that drive and high expectation/standard that you were held to while enlisted. If you’re able to keep that aspect intact and apply the demand for excellence in your future endeavors, you can accomplish some great things in the civilian sector.”
